Too Close To Home

My former minister once described our hometown as Disney World, North Carolina. The grass is unusually green and always well groomed (except at our house), the streets are always clean, and crime consists mostly of the occasional ticket from a red light camera or parking too long in the fire lane at Whole Foods.

But then something changed. We still are the bastion of yuppie-dom where people want to move from other parts of the country… but our crime-free town has also found its way into the national media spotlight twice as two women have been murdered since the beginning of the year. In both cases the husband seemed to be under suspicion. One was arrested in February. For the most recent case, its too early to tell who the culprit is… and I would hate to point towards her husband if he is innocent. There will be enough other people making assumptions and accusations, let’s let the police do their job.

I feel such sorrow for the families of both women. These things shouldn’t happen anywhere… and up until recently they didn’t happen here. Two occurences does not a trend make, but when you are talking about murder… two times is two too many. I sure will be glad when Cary makes it out of the national news for good… we don’t need any more crime. I’m starting to miss Disney World.
