Social Engineering Run Amok

Government Health Care Means No More Soda

Get ready for the government to control every aspect of your life as it prepares for government health care… and how to pay for it.

Smoke?  We’ve already seen taxes on cigarettes increase to ridiculous levels.  The motives are two-fold; discourage people from smoking, and get those that do to pad government coffers.

Like to drink soft drinks… its not as healthy as water, so the Senate is considering additional taxes on sugary drinks too.  All in an effort to guide your behavior and help pay for their plans.

Surely additional taxes on alcohol, coffee, and non-Florida orange juice is next.  And then additional taxes on fast food, potato chips, cookies, ice cream… who knows.  PepsiCo, McDonalds, and General Mills better unionize if they don’t want to be forced out of business through taxes or other government controls.

Controlling what we eat and drink is only the beginning.  If they want to make health care affordable, they have to control other behavior, including what kind of preventative efforts we all endure, what vaccines we take, how often we go to the gym, etc.

Under universal health care, prepare for the government to force children to get the MMR vaccine, their parents’ fears about Autism be damned.  The next step will be regulating people’s weight, mandatory yearly physicals, and government controlled reproductive health for women.  Ladies, do you really want the Federal Government asking you when you had your last mammogram?  And let’s not even get started on government ordered prostate exams.

You might think this is silly, but its highly plausible.  Time and time again, from special interest groups, to the campaign trail and DC hearings we’ve heard politicians and lobbyists posing as social engineers, talking about preventative measures as the only means to restrict costs.  And why not? If you are paying for the health care of your neighbor, are you going to keep silent when they smoke a pack or eat a bag of Oreos on their front porch?  Will the local grocery store have mandated limits on how many frozen pizzas you can buy?

In 2004, NaturalNews.com proposed cutting 90% of heatlh care costs by putting additional taxes on junk food and soft drinks, adding additional FDA warnings and regulation on products, banning advertising on unhealthy foods, banning vending machines, and even prohibiting the sale of some food items.  In 2004, this might have seemed a little outlandish, but with the increased taxes on cigarettes, proposed taxes on sugary drinks, the FDA crackdown on Cheerios, and the rampant talk of “preventative care” as the holy grail to lead to universal health care… it doesn’t seem too crazy anymore.  Gee, I wonder who that guy at NaturalNews voted for?
