The Politically Correct crowd has done it again, trying to rewrite history because they can’t afford to re-write the musical Ragtime. After purchasing the rights to the musical in January, Wilmette Park District (Wilmette, IL) canceled the show just 12 days before opening night. Why? The use of the N-Word.
Wilmette Park District Executive Director Tom Grisamore said he made the decision to pull the show 12 days after learning the details of dialogue and lyrics that include use of the “n-word.” The show was set to open July 10 for three weekends in the Starlight Theater free outdoor concert series
Forget what the show is actually about or that there may be lessons to be learned and historical context to be understood. Everything has to be (for lack of a better term) white-washed. If you censor anything that offends anyone, what’s left?
The show’s director gets it (too bad park officials don’t), saying:
“You take that word out of this story and you invalidate my history as an African-American male,” said Perry.
“Do I like the word? No. But to pretend nobody said it is wrong. I wouldn’t even consider doing that,” Perry said. “Context is everything, and it’s not gratuitous, it’s not for shock value.
“How can we learn about our present if we don’t educate people about what happened in our past?”
Agreed. And for park officials, it only gets better. Like good liberals, the decision makers who paid for the show only to kill it might want their money back. “Also unclear is whether the district will be able to get back any of $2,500 paid for the rights to run the show. Here’s a thought: If you can’t take responsibility for your own actions and decisions, don’t try to take responsibility for what everyone else can see or hear.
