With the surprise announcement that Supreme Court Justice David Souter is retiring, the question on everyone’s mind is how will President Obama play this hand. With 100 days behind him, and Supreme Court nominees generally getting more press than your run of the mill tax-cheating cabinet secretary, will President Obama have the political capital for this appointment to sail through? Will the Democrats who tried to filibuster (Obama included) and those of the left who attacked George W. Bush’s appointments as not being moderate enough keep silent if Obama’s nominee is not middle ground? Will President Obama once again let his left fringe allies like MoveOn.org choreograph the play for him?
Time will tell. But when we said elections had consequences… this is one of the big ones. All of you conservatives and Republicans who voted for this guy or stayed home, pay very close attention. While difficult to repeal the legislative agenda and massive government expansion that President Obama is setting forth… it is possible. But there’s no way to remove a Supreme Court Justice until they retire or die. And their votes from the bench become precedence which are not likely to be forgotten.
Based on recent appointments like Kathleen Sebelius, you have to wonder what kind of late-term abortion supporting, gay-marriage proponent will get the nod. Our Second Amendment rights are already under threat… will they be the next to go? What about more hindrance on free speech, or more restrictions on our nation’s Christian founding? Transnationalism? Property rights? More government interference in our children’s education?
Elections have consequences… and we are about the face a big one. As if the road to socialism hasn’t been fast enough, pray we aren’t about to hit overdrive.
Think Benedict Arlen will have enough cajones to go against his new best friend Barack Obama the way he did Reagan appointee Robert Bork? I’m not holding my breath.
